Crystal City was home in a lot of ways.
He had spent his learning career there, gaining new understanding and finding the right mechs and femmes that would hopefully be willing to help him find his place outside of said safe environment. Even if he was not truly comfortable in some of the more political offers that were being made. He had no real interest in being seen, or gaining leverage into new circles of influence, he would leave such to those that liked being interrogated and judged by wealthy patrons. If he were to spend the rest of his life in a tiny lab in some out of the way corner of the city it would not bother him in the least, if he was truly in need of funding he would work for such instead.
It was an aspect Starscream knew made him odd to several of his peers when they would discuss what they would do once they had left the college behind. He just loved research and designing new ideas into something that would benefit others, the thrill of discovery and experimentation was far more to his taste then accolades and banquets for awards. It was why he spent more time amidst the archives then at the various functions that were held. Though, his own awkwardness in social environments may have also helped him in his decisions as well. Have him discuss the culmination effect of Alpha waves upon certain elements and he could recite an entire dissertation about such without even a pause to gather his thoughts. Put him in a setting of small talk or just general chatting and he would stumble and freeze up before excusing himself quickly and finding a quiet corner to hide in.
Luckily for him and his future there were patrons who saw such as a quirk of genius, and were more interested in what his research would do for them then having a charismatic trophy to show off to other patrons at their little meet ups. So he did not have close personal ties within the city, but it was still far more comfortable then the few times he had traveled to other cities. Crystal City was familiar and in many ways safe within his thoughts. Nothing bad would happen to him when he was in his city, and the rumors of rebellion were just whispered words to attempt making one another uneasy. Because why would such ever darken the lives of those here? They were scientists for the most part, and would hardly be of any reason for anyone to wish them harm.
Crystal City was his home in a lot of ways that kept him feeling safe and removed from the rumblings of war. Which was why its loss was so keenly felt.
